Expert tips for planning funeral catering

If you are reading this then you are likely suffering a recent loss of a loved one. Please allow us to extend our sincere condolences to you at this difficult time. You are also probably starting to plan the funeral, wake or celebration of life and thinking about what to feed your guests and how to arrange funeral catering.

Here at The Indian Dish as an award winning, experienced funeral caterer that has been in business for over 10 years we hope you will find these tips helpful. If you have any questions simply call us on 07538 811185 or complete an enquiry form here

🪽 Date

Once you have a date for the funeral service, contact local venues and caterers to check their availability

🪽 Finding a Venue

Search for a venue local to the crematorium or burial ground so that your guests do not have far to travel. Check if the venue allow external caterers for funeral catering and if so, what their dry hire cost includes. Do they allow caterers to use their kitchen to reheat food? Our knowledgable team can help you source a venue and provide advice on your catering options. You may not have had to organise a funeral before so please feel free to ask our experienced team for their guidance. Based in Kent, we also cater for London, Surrey and Sussex.

🪽 Budget and guest numbers

Have a rough budget in mind when reaching out to caterers. It can be hard to know exact guest numbers as not everyone will RSVP and in the planning stage, you may not send out invitations until you have booked your venue and funeral catering. Try to work out minimum guest numbers, this will help you budget.

🪽 Type of catering and setup

With a budget in mind, you can consider what type of catering you would like - perhaps a hot buffet served to your guests with a variety of curry dishes and Indian sides. Here at The Indian Dish we find our canapé station setup works really well. This is a self-serve station with a mixture of hot and cold Indian Buffet items like Vegetable and lamb Samosa, wraps, chaat, Chicken Tikka bites etc.

🪽 Insurance and Food Safety

The last thing you want is anyone to fall ill at your event, as professional Funeral caterers we take the utmost care to look after you and your guests. We hold a 5 Star Hygiene Rating alongside £2 million Public Liability Insurance.

🪽 Trust and reviews

It is important to find out as much as you can about your funeral caterers, reviews and testimonials from previous clients can be really helpful. We are consistently rated 5 star on Google and Trustpilot,

“Delicious Indian food and service by Ali and Julia!! They made our Uncle’s funeral really special - and there were plenty of empty plates around!! Everyone loved the food and we ever so grateful to them for making the funeral lunch enjoyable". Mala, Uncles Funeral for 80 guests at our partner venue - Mercure Great Danes, Maidstone.
